The Golden Circle Route

If you’ve traveled to Iceland, chances are you will schedule in a day trip to explore The Golden Circle. Below, I have provided a possible route to see some of the most notable viewpoints.

If you are running low on time or are unable to do all the attractions described below, be sure to at least visit Thingvellir National Park, Strokkur Geyser and Gullfoss waterfall.

Possible Route from Reykjavik:

1. Thorufoss (40 min drive)

2. Thingvellir National Park (20 min drive)

  • Öxaráfoss
  • Silfra Fissure – possible snorkeling/diving excursion

2. Kerid Crater (35 min drive)

  • Entrance fee – 400 ISK
  • Easy hike down to the base of the crater or around the top rim

3. Faxifoss Waterfall (30 min drive)

4. Bruarfoss (20 min drive)

  • Approximately a 2.5 hr hike (Noted in the post titled, “Bruarfoss Waterfall Hike”)
  • Nearby, there is a delicious ice cream spot – Efstidalur II.

5.  Haukadalur, Strokkur, Geysir (15 min drive)

  • About every 10 min Strokkur Geyser will go off!

6.  Gullfoss waterfall (10 min drive)

Things to Note:

  • Prior to your journey, go to a local grocery store (cheapest finds will be in Bonús/Kronan) and purchase some food/snacks. This will help with time management and allow you to see more of the wonders Iceland has to offer.
  • After traveling to Gullfoss waterfall, you could return back to Reykjavik in about an hr and 40 min. When I traveled with my mother, we stayed in a guesthouse in Fellskot because we traveled further southeast the following day.
