Bruarfoss Waterfall is one of Iceland’s hidden treasures found right off of The Golden Circle Route. If you are looking for an easy hike to get out of the car this is a perfect pitstop for you!
Hike Route:
After some research and google searches, I thought I had figured out the “right” way to go about the hike… Many links and comments throughout TripAdvisor mentioned to begin by parking at Bruarfoss Waterfall Official Parking (by the Bruara river) and then to trek along the riverside for about 2 miles. These links described that this helps avoid disrupting the local neighborhood and walking through their backyards.
So, we did just that. I would have been skeptical about the route we took, except we passed many individuals returning from their walk and spotted a couple about 10 min ahead of us going the same way.
Along the riverbank walk, the scenery was breathtaking. The glacial water has a blue hue throughout the entire river and the area is surrounded with multiple mountains. On our hike, we passed the three “smaller” waterfalls: Gongustigur, Hlauptungufoss, Midfoss, until we crossed a wooden bridge to finally see Bruarfoss.
After successfully finding Bruarfoss waterfall, we began our trek back to the car parking lot. This is when we stumbled upon what I presume new homeowners who told us to turn around and take this path marked by sharpie labelled on wood planks… They weren’t very helpful as to the appropriate way to travel back to our car. But, we obliged and turned around. Luckily, I had google maps and could sketch out a rough way that would bring us to our car… but, it unfortunately added an extra mile and had us walk along the roadside for half a mile.
But, to help avoid any further confusion/complications the individuals who stopped stated they would update TripAdvisor with photos and descriptions leading you along the correct path.
