Thorufoss (Þórufoss) – Off of the Golden Circle Route

Are you an HBO Game of Thrones fanatic or love to embrace nature with minimal crowds? Then, Thorufoss is a place for you!

Approximately 40 min from Reykjavik, you will uncover this natural treasure. So, if you have the time, this destination can be perfectly added as a slight detour for the Golden Circle route.

NOTE: We found NO trouble using the generic maps app (brought us straight to the waterfall itself). But, just in case here are some rough directions…After about 15km on Route 36, turn left onto Route 48. Drive for about 5km and look for a small sign and parking area on the right for Þórufoss.

The waterfall can be seen to the north from the parking area. For a closer look, you could maneuver down the steep, unsteady hill down to the water. However, during my visit in late March, there was still mid-calf snow covering the ground. So, we decided to shadow other footprints on the high-ground to get a better view from up top.

NOTE: There have been cases that the entire waterfall is frozen over in the winter.

Additionally, there are no hours and no admission fee for Thorufoss.
