Where to go in Reykjavik

Along the east coastline is Iceland’s capital and largest city, Reykjavik.

Things to do:

  • Perlan Museum – The fourth floor provides a perfect spot to enjoy a hot beverage and treat with a 360° view of the entire city. As well, they offer a planetarium show of the Northern lights and an interactive experience of Iceland’s various natural wonders (man made Ice Cave, Glacial/Oceanic exhibition and a realistic bird cliff).
    • Hours: 9:00-19:00
  • Hallgrimskirkja- Modern Cathedral with a tower that can be seen throughout the city. Admission into the church is free, but you can travel up the tower for 1000 ISK and children (7-16) 100 ISK. There is an English service offered the last Sunday of every month from 14:00-15:00.
    • Hours:
      • Winter (Oct-April) 9:00-17:00 – Tower closes 16:30
      • Summer (May-Sept) 9:00-21:00 – Tower closes 20:30
  • The Sun Voyager (Solfarid) – Steel boat sculpture on walkway beside the sea.
  • Harpa Concert Hall – Located in the heart of the city next to the old harbor, the sparkling architecture of this building is one to see from the inside and out.
    • Hours: 8:00-0:00
  • National Museum of Iceland – History of the Icelandic nation from settlement to present day. Admission is 2000 ISK.
    • Hours: 10:00-17:00
  • Reykjavík Maritime Museum – Located in the old harbor is a renovated former fish factory with exhibitions and artifacts. Admission is 1700 ISK.
    • Hours: 10:00-17:00
  • The Old Harbor – Go enjoy some delicious ice cream (Valdís) or stop in the coffee shop (Kaffivagninn)
  • Grotta Lighthouse – Perfect scenic spot to see beach with the backdrop of mountains during the day and a popular spot for viewing the Northern lights in the evening.
  • Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach – Challenge yourself by jumping into the cold ocean water and then warming yourself back up in the man-made hot water lagoon. Admission is 650 ISK.
    • Hours: 11:00- 14:00 | 17:00-20:00
  •  Hofdi House – Famous for being the meeting point Ronald Reagan (USA) and Mikhail Gorbachev (Soviet Union).
  • Hið íslenzka reðasafn – The Icelandic Phallological Museum. Admission is 1700 ISK.
    • Hours:
      • (June-August) 9:00-18:00
      • (Sept – May) 10:00 -18:00

Places to Eat (on a Budget):

  • Brauð & Co – For a decent price, enjoy freshly baked bread and pastries (Try their vanilla/cinnamon buns!)
  • Icelandic Street Food – Enjoy unlimited refills of soup and small desserts for as little as 1450 ISK!
  • Vita Burger – For around 1700 ISK, enjoy a great burger and fries (I recommend the blue cheese burger)! This joint is similar to a dive bar and is recognized by its lighthouse sign.
  • Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur – Be sure to try all the fixings on the hotdog! Also, it only cost around 380 ISK.
  • Harry’s – For around $50, enjoy a delicious 3 course meal.
  • The cheapest local grocery store is Bónus
