Japan Travel Tips

What to do about WIFI/Phone Coverage?

“What should I do about my phone charges – data rates/calls?” One major problem people tend to run into is international phone coverage. Luckily, Japan has a system where you can purchase a portable WIFI called a Pocket WIFI. This wireless, bluetooth device helps bridge the gap between language and assists with directions around the city.

Renting the device is simple. All you need to do is put in your arrival information/duration of your adventure and decide whether you want it sent to the airport or to your hotel. We decided the airport would be a better location, so we had the WIFI as insurance to help direct us to our hotel (more information on the Pocket WIFI below).

*Remember to return the Pocket WIFI to the post office (return packaging is provided on the first day) BEFORE you head through customs for your departure.

NOTE: There are additional ways to WIFI – metro/train/subway stations, coffee shops/restaurants and hotels.

What to do about ground transportation?

Taxi’s are by far the most expensive way of travel around the city (given they are also one of the nicest ways). But unless you have/want to spend the extra money, I suggest straying away from this choice. We stayed in Tokyo for a day of exploration and utilized a 24-hour unlimited rides ticket for the rail system (around 1,800 yen). It was simple to get. Just walk up to one of the automated machines located at the train station, select your preferred language, and request the specific ticket package you want. To travel around the city, we used google maps and typed in the specific location we wanted to visit. It was so efficient and led us directly to where we needed to be!

NOTE: The rail system runs from 5 am to 1 am and rush hour is roughly from 7:30-9:30 am / 5:30-7:30 pm. AND IT IS PACKED. So, if you can, try to avoid this time for traveling.

What should I pack?

That is dependent upon what month/where you are going to be spending your time. Since I was there for the month of June, my luggage primarily consisted of comfortable travel clothing. However, one thing that was essential for Niigata was a rain jacket (as precipitation is abundant).

If you are planning on hiking or trekking other trails/mountains consider packing essentials (i.e. hiking boots, layered clothing).
